There seemed to be only two sounds. That of her heart pounding thunderously in her chest, and her paws hitting the ground. She could hear his paws a short distance behind her; his breathing like a whisper caught and dragged off by the wind.
Looking up the sky was blue and clear. Only a few white puffs interrupting the aquatic blue. The sound of his paws sped up, and so did she. Her breathing was getting ragged. It burned through her throat and her lungs like fire. It was like a beautiful rhythmical poem; every muscle pulling and tensing and letting go.
they soon ran right out of road and blasted into the tall grasses. The grass whipping her legs as if to punish her for going too fast to take in the scene.
Something caught her attention in the corner of her eye. It was him. He ran next to her as if at ease. With a half grunt half growl, she sped up. Then, unexpectedly, she threw all of her remaining energy in to propelling herself forward like a rocket. Throwing all of her strength and power, energy and will in to nothing more than that of speed.
As he fell behind she could hear his padding footfalls speed up slightly. Ahead the finish line loomed closer, a taunting, distant sigh of relief. She pushed even harder, then harder still. The world seeming to be nothing more that a sheet of color, and the ground barley beneath her massive paws.
Her heart seemed to want to explode in her chest at that moment. The finish line could not be more that twenty feet off. All time seemed to cease. The world was hers. Every breath she took made her lungs scream in dear agony. The pause in time gave her serenity. A flood gate of emotions exploded into her. Courage. Pride. Excitement. Nervousness.
Time, slammed back to her when she crossed the finish line. He was right behind her; so close he could've swatted her flanks. They collapsed onto the ground, laughing and panting. She managed to croak out, "I win." He just laughed and swatted her playfully with his giant paws.Let me know what you think. =)
